Acute Medicine
Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) provides the initial assessment, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients within the first 72 hours of their hospital stay. This usually takes places on an Acute Medical Unit, or Same Day Emergency Care for patients who can be discharged on the same day.
If you're interested in the specialty, there are lots of ways to get more involved at a regional or even national level.
The Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) is the national group responsible for the specialty. They run a bi-annual conference and lots of other events aimed at all members of the MDT.
takeAIM is a trainee-led initiative run by SAM. It's aimed at promoting careers in Acute Medicine. Their website has lots of information aimed at resident doctors.
The Surrey Collaborative Acute Medicine Network (SCAN) is a regular dinner set up to encourage collaboration between AMUs in the region.
